What is the required lube for a Birfield joint? Grease or oil?

I have a friend asking and he said the Toyota factory service guy didn't know the answer.

I told him not to worry, I could get the answer for him.

It's a '92 full size, if that matters.

I repacked a CV joint on my grand cherokee once. I bought special CV grease. It looked just liked regular grease, but somehow it's different. I think that difference may only be the price :P

Any Birfield joint I have ever dealt with is filled with grease. Use can use that special grease that Eric is talking about if you want to spend more money but it is'nt nesessary.

Thanks to you both. It seems the "oil seals" he replaced were what promted the question. We found a manual page online showing the special grease.
