Jeep Motor Mounts Installation / Upgrade – M.O.R.E BombProof™

This write up explains how to upgrade your Cherokee engine motor mounts to Mountain Off-Road Enterprises (M.O.R.E) mounts. The stock motor mount rubber is not completely steel encapsulated and over time the rubber compresses leaving the support bolt almost floating. Eventually the bolt sleeve will separate completely from the rubber housing like shown in the picture below. Other than a visual inspection, symptoms of bad mounts could be, clunking and shaking during start-up or increased rattling during acceleration. This write up is based on a ’90 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L but will work for most years regardless of motor mount type.

Parts
M.O.R.E offers several motor mounts for different makes of Jeeps (www.mountainoffroad.com). I ordered a pair of the “Torsion Rubber” mounts #JM600 which was about $120. Inferior stock mounts will run about $50 - $60 a pair. Other aftermarket mfg’s have similar mounts but are Polyurethane which I avoided due to the possibility of increased vibration.

Installation
  1. Set up a jack underneath the front of the engine oil pan. You will use it to take the weight off the mounts when replacing them one side at a time. It also helps for raising and lowering the engine a bit to align the new mount bolt holes.

  2. Start by removing the driver’s side stock mount. I found it easier to get to after removing the air box. The mount bolt and nut are15mm and the large through bolt is 18mm. You may have to adjust the engine height a bit with the jack to slip the bolt out and remove the mount.

  3. Now do the reverse process when installing the new mount. According to the ’90 XJ FSM the mount to cross member 15mm bolts/nuts should be torque to 35ft-lbs and the large through bolt and lock nut to 40ft-lbs

  4. Next is the passenger side mount which is a bit more difficult for most years because the Oil Filter adapter needs to be removed to get the through bolt out.

  5. Clean the area around the oil filter adapter flange. Place a drip pan under the oil filter and remove.
  6. Next remove the oil filter-block adapter using a 16mm(?) wrench. There’s barely enough room to get it out between the block and frame rail.
  7. Try and maintain the 3 o-rings otherwise they will need to be replaced. Maybe it’s a good idea to just replace them anyway although I didn’t do mine and its fine.
  8. Using the same process as the drivers side mount, remove the old mount and replace it. Torque it up and remove the jack.
  9. Then clean and assemble the oil adapter flange and filter. Don’t forget to check you engine oil level after starting and checking for oil leaks.
