Trail Description

The Ohl Olson OVH area was a great place for the 4x4 Trail Hunter’s September meet and greet. The area includes a private covered picnic/BBQ area, pit style restroom and parking for lots and lots of 4x4s. Note there is no running water in the area. The Shasta campground about 1 half mile down the road is the nearest water. So remember to pack in plenty. As far as 4-wheeling the OHV area offers 4 specific obstacles or "mini trails" each is short but fun. They include:
  1. Mini Dismal Swamp
  2. Mini Rubicon
  3. Mini Fordyce
  4. Mini Kim’s Winch Hill
There are also small hill climbs and large boulders to crawl in between the trails. All trails have great vantage points for spectators. Overall this is a great place for a group to spend the day or weekend playing or practicing recovery and driving skills. Just outside the small Ohl Olson area are miles of trails which are part of the Chappie-Shasta OHV area operated by the BLM. So there is plenty to keep you busy.

The dismal swamp was bone dry when we used the area. So if you are interested in using that obstacle plan you trip during the wet season. Have fun and remember to be responsible and keep our trails clean. Camping and Lodging Shasta Campground offers 22 camp units for tents and recreational vehicles, hookups are not available. Campground has potable drinking water and vault toilets. There is a daily Campground fee. Motels are available in Redding.

Season
The best times to visit are fall, winter, and spring. Summertime temperatures of over 100°F can make activities very uncomfortable. Poison oak grows at lower elevations. There is no potable water in the area, except at the campground.

Directions
(Matheson OHV Access) >From Redding, take Highway 299 west about 2 miles to Iron Mountain Road. Turn right on Iron Mountain Road and continue for about 6 miles to Matheson Road. Turn right at Matheson Road where you see the "Matheson OHV Access" sign. Copley Mtn. Staging Area will be on the right side of Matheson road. Look for OHV Parking sign. This is a day use facility only and no overnight camping is allowed. There is a toilet facility, information bulletin board, and parking area at this site. From Copley Mtn. Staging you can access either Copley Mtn. trail (#4) or Coram road (#3); both of these routes provide southern access into the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area. If you travel North on Coram road (#3), for approx. 7 miles, you will reach the Chappie-Shasta OHV staging area. This is a roughly graded 4x4 recommended road. There are 2 gates located on the Southern end of Coram road that are closed during rainy weather. For information regarding gate closures, you can call 530-224-2179. Ohl Olson OHV Training Area permits are required to use the Ohl Olson area. Please contact the U.S. Forest Service Shasta Lake Ranger District for information or permits. (530)275-1587
